Cure Testing

Updated: Mar 25, 2024

Because there are so many opinions on curing, I decided to try it out on my own. Originally, I never really cured because of watching people like Wade from Black Tie Barn and others who have experimented. Also, I started with 1 week curing time in the beginning. For more information, curing first began in the soap world that slowly attached itself to the candle world. It's understandable that a candle needs to harden fully, but let's see if it really makes a difference. I also needed to test the wax melter. These were melted to 220 and FO was added at 200 because of quick cooling.

All three candles will be exactly the same except for days cured. I used the formula for The Snow Queen's Lair.

Jar: clear straight 10 oz jar from The Flaming Candle

Wick: CDN 8

FO: 12% .96

Notes: Used a wax melter

3/20/2024 2 day curing

7:07 pm- I lit the candle which had a very nice aesthetic other than a few wet spots. The flame is perfect and will be lit for 4 hours before a power burn.

9:07 pm. The melt pool was half-way and the hot throw was very weak. 5/10 but it's understandable as it is not paraffin.

10:00 pm. There's a 1 cm hangup, normal for coconut apricot. The hot throw is still 5/10.

3/21/2024

5:45 pm. I did not trim wick as people normally don't trim their wick. The flame was a little tall and there was no background scent.

8:08 pm. The hot throw was about 7/10.

9:16 pm. The hot throw seemed to go down to 6/10. I blew it out. I have work in the morning.

3:24 pm. There is still no really hot throw. FAIL

3/22/2024 4 day curing

7:42 am. The candle was very smooth and the flame was nice and perfect. There were a few wet spots but they don't effect the quality of smell.

9:11 am. There s no hot throw yet.

9:36 pm. Hot throw is getting better.

11:21 am. There were a few background scents since I made more candles. The tunnel was starting to disappear with only 1/2 cm on one of the sides. I blew it out because I needed to leave. (4 hrs)

1:09 pm. I lit the candle with the background smell of pork. I also noticed that I eat pork a lot. lol.

3:34 pm. The hot throw is 7/10.

8:56 pm. 7/10. There is a medium sized mushroom, but no soot on glass even after power burning.

11:00 pm. 7/10. Blew it out. 10 hours. The flame was quite high and dancing. Medium mushroom still and no soot on glass. 1/2 way. Life might be appx 40 hrs. FAIL

#3 FAIL

NOTE: This is the first time using 12% Fragrance oil. It's a bad idea. I will redo this test with 10% like the original candles I used. There were too much sweating and black lines in the melt pool. NO MORE 12% for Tales of the Candle. (Extra note: If it works for you, then go for it. Everyone has different factors from the indoor temperature, to glass temp, to if the candle is racked up or not.)
